Pay It Forward

April 9, 2010

Today while bending to my cravings of caffeine and pastries, I experienced a selfless gesture that acted as a catalyst to the rest of my day.  While waiting in line at Starbucks, someone in the car ahead of me, paid for my order.  WOW!

What a wonderful way to make someone else stop and appreciate the simplest and yet under appreciated thing in life:  kindness.  A complete stranger felt compelled to brighten my day without even accepting a “thank you” from me.  They drove off ahead of me and didn’t know that this caffeine fix was due to my runninglategottagetthekidsgoing kind of day.

Feeling absolutely inspired about the event, I decided to pay for the order behind me.   I cannot say the event spiraled into a coffee giving event that the 6 o’clock news reported on, but what this did for the rest of my day was simply amazing.  I found myself smiling more at strangers and holding more doors open for those several feet behind me.  I beamed ear to ear on the outside while my insides were elated with joy.  This one small act the unknown stranger gave me, made me want to repeat it over and over in other ways to give others the same feeling that I had.

So, can you pay it forward and cause a chain reaction of goodness?  Tomorrow could be an awesome day for someone else too just by doing something unexpectantly good.
